A Relaxed Woodland Wedding in North Yorkshire

bride and groom portraits at Low Osgoodby Grange Wedding Photography

Some weddings just feel different from the moment you arrive.

Low Osgoodby Grange has that kind of atmosphere. Tucked away in the North Yorkshire countryside — five miles from Thirsk, at the foot of the Hambleton Hills — with woodland ceremonies, lakeside views and giant tipis, it feels relaxed in all the right ways. Not overly polished. Not trying too hard. Just a brilliant space for couples who want something personal and completely their own.

That suited Holly and Josh perfectly.

Holly spent the morning getting ready with her bridesmaids in the onsite B&B at Low Osgoodby Grange. It was a calm, relaxed space before the day got going properly, and it made a lovely backdrop for all those natural pre-wedding moments.

There was a brief spell of rain right as Holly arrived on horseback — which, as it turned out, was the most cinematic timing imaginable. The rest of the day was overcast and atmospheric, before the sun finally broke through properly in the evening. Absolutely nobody let any of it get in the way of enjoying themselves.

Horses, 60s Muscle Car and Yorkshire Rain

Josh arrived in a stunning vintage 1960s Dodge, bringing a bit of rock ‘n’ roll energy to the middle of the Yorkshire countryside.

Then, Holly somehow managed to completely steal the show by arriving on horseback through the rain towards the woodland ceremony.

No panic about the weather. No stress. Just everyone embracing the day exactly as it was.

The rain softened everything beautifully in those few minutes; the trees looked almost cinematic, and the whole ceremony had this quiet intensity that worked perfectly for documentary wedding photography. Some arrivals you just know are going to produce brilliant photographs. This was one of them.

As a Yorkshire wedding photographer, these are the kinds of weddings I love most. Real moments, relaxed people and a day that actually feels like the couple it belongs to.

Why I Loved Photographing at Low Osgoodby Grange

Low Osgoodby Grange still feels like one of Yorkshire’s hidden gems.

Set on 250 acres of working farmland with a private lake, and that big open countryside feel, it gives couples something genuinely different from the more polished venue circuit. The woodland ceremony area — a hidden pergola glade with a natural canopy overhead — is one of the most atmospheric ceremony spaces I’ve photographed in. The lakeside tipis keep the whole day relaxed and informal without losing any sense of occasion.

It works brilliantly for couples who want their wedding to feel personal rather than produced.

A huge part of that comes down to the team behind it, too. Charlie (there’s a lovely black and white photo of her enthusiastically pouring champagne later in the post!), her husband and her dad were brilliant throughout the day and created a genuinely welcoming atmosphere from start to finish. You can tell immediately how much they care about the venue and the couples getting married there. Even with a mixed forecast hanging over things, everything felt calm, organised and completely relaxed.

That kind of environment makes a real difference when you’re trying to photograph people naturally.

Relaxed Tipi Wedding Photography

Once everyone headed into the tipis after the ceremony, the entire day properly came alive.

And then, almost perfectly timed, the sun finally made an appearance just as the evening reception got underway.

After a day of shifting light and dramatic overcast skies, the sun finally breaking through across the lake gave the whole venue a completely different feel. Guests spilled outside with drinks, the tipis glowed as the evening started settling in, and the whole place took on this relaxed festival atmosphere that suited the day perfectly.

Low Osgoodby Grange really comes into its own at that point. Between the lakeside setting, the tipis, the open outdoor spaces and the slightly wild energy of the evening, it felt less like a formal wedding venue and more like a countryside festival with all their favourite people in one place.

The bucking bronco appearing later on probably helped with that, too.

There were brilliant speeches, loads of laughter, muddy shoes, emotional hugs and laughter as everyone took it in turns attempting to stay on the bronco for longer than a few seconds. Exactly the sort of moments I love capturing — no direction, no interrupting, just letting things unfold.

Some of my favourite images from the entire wedding happened in between everything else. Guests laughing outside by the lake, people warming up under the fairy lights inside the tipis, quiet moments as the sun dropped in the background, and complete chaos around the bronco a few minutes later.

Those are usually the photographs that end up mattering most.

FAQ – Low Osgoodby Grange Weddings

Where is Low Osgoodby Grange?

Low Osgoodby Grange is a countryside wedding venue near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, sitting at the foot of the Hambleton Hills on a 250-acre working farm. It’s about five miles from the town centre and — despite feeling genuinely tucked away — has solid transport links if you’ve got guests travelling from further afield. The private, rural setting is a big part of the appeal.

How many guests can Low Osgoodby Grange accommodate?

The Nordic tipis comfortably seat up to 120 guests for a wedding breakfast and can stretch to around 150 for the evening reception. The open outdoor spaces and fields around the lake mean the day never feels hemmed in, even at fuller capacities.

Is Low Osgoodby Grange good for outdoor ceremonies?

It’s one of the most unique outdoor ceremony spaces that I’ve photographed in Yorkshire. The woodland ceremony area has a pergola set into a hidden glade, with the tree canopy offering decent natural shelter — and a covered indoor alternative if things turn properly heavy. The lakeside setting is a second option for couples who want open countryside views and the hills as a backdrop instead. Both work brilliantly for relaxed, natural

What happens if it rains at Low Osgoodby Grange?

Worth knowing that even a brief spell of rain at the right moment can produce something genuinely special. At this wedding, it arrived perfectly timed — right as Holly rode in on horseback for the ceremony. The woodland looked incredible for those few minutes, and the rest of the day was atmospheric and overcast before the evening sun came through. The tipis are solid and warm, the covered walkways mean guests stay dry between spaces, and the outdoor areas are worth venturing into regardless. The venue actively tells couples to dress for the weather and lean into it rather than hide from it. Good advice. There is also options to hve the ceremony within the tipis themselves should the heavens open – Charlie has all your bases covered!

Tell me about tipi weddings at Low Osgoodby Grange?

Yes — the three Nordic tipis are the heart of the reception. Solid wood flooring throughout, long rustic tables, fairy lights, a wood-burning fire pit, a built-in bar and a proper sound system. The combination of the warm tipi interior and the lakeside setting just outside creates a festival atmosphere that’s very difficult to manufacture at a more conventional venue.

Does Low Osgoodby Grange allow you to bring your own suppliers?

It does. The venue operates as a blank canvas — couples aren’t tied to specific packages or a fixed supplier list, which tends to produce more personal, less generic weddings. That flexibility usually shows in the photography, too. Days built around what the couple actually want rather than a standard template tend to photograph better.

Do you photograph weddings at Low Osgoodby Grange?

Yes. As a Yorkshire wedding photographer covering North Yorkshire and beyond, venues like Low Osgoodby Grange are exactly what I enjoy most — enough atmosphere and space for things to unfold naturally, with a team who let the day breathe rather than run it like a production line. If you’re planning a wedding here and want relaxed documentary photography without the awkward posing, get in touch and tell me about your plans.
