Yorkshire Portrait Photography

Real moments. Real people. No awkward posing, no cheesy grins, no counting to three.

I’m Phil — a documentary photographer with 20+ years of experience and 500+ weddings behind me. But long before I was chasing brides down aisles, I was photographing families, babies, bump bumps, and people who’d rather do anything than stand in front of a camera. Sound familiar? Good. That’s exactly who I photograph best.

Whether you’re after a relaxed family session in the Yorkshire countryside, a newborn shoot at home, a pregnancy portrait, or a pre-wedding photoshoot to calm those camera nerves — you’re in the right place.

Yorkshire Family Photographer

Family shoots should feel like a nice afternoon out — not like a military operation involving instructions to tilt your chin and “now look at each other.”

My approach is simple: I’ll suggest a great location, you bring yourselves (dogs very welcome), and I’ll do the rest. I’ll be watching, moving, observing — capturing the little things that happen between the posed shots. The giggling. The running. The chaos. That’s the good stuff.

I shoot family sessions across Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire — Clumber Park, Sherwood Forest, open moorland, beautiful urban backdrops. Whatever fits your family’s personality.

Newborn Photography Yorkshire

There’s a very short window — roughly 5 to 21 days — when newborns are sleepy, curled up, and completely unaware how adorable they are. I photograph that window.

Sessions take place at your home, at your pace. There is absolutely no rush. Nappy changes, feeds, cuddles, siblings causing havoc — all completely expected and entirely welcome. You don’t perform for me; I just document what’s already happening.

I’ve been trusted to photograph some families multiple times over — from bump to birth to toddler chaos. It’s one of the privileges of this job I never take for granted.

Pregnancy & Maternity Photography Yorkshire

A bump shoot isn’t about making you look like a magazine cover (unless that’s what you want). It’s about capturing something that disappears far too quickly.

I offer maternity sessions at home or outdoors across Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire — Clumber Park being a particular favourite for its light, its landscape, and the fact that it never gets old. Sessions are relaxed, unhurried, and nothing like the stiff studio shoots you might be picturing.

Many of my maternity clients come back for a newborn shoot a few weeks later. Some have been coming back for years.

Individual & Personal Portraits Yorkshire

Whether it’s professional headshots, personal branding portraits, or simply photos of yourself that don’t make you want to hide from the camera — I’ve been making people look great for over two decades.

Most people I photograph tell me they hate having their photo taken. By the end of the session, they’ve usually changed their mind. The key is not making it weird — and I’ve had a lot of practice at that.

Portrait Photography FAQs

What’s included in a portrait session?

You’ll receive approximately 50–100 fully edited, high-resolution images delivered to a secure online gallery within two weeks. Print upgrades are available.

Where do sessions take place?

Outdoors across Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, or at your home — particularly for newborn and family sessions. I’ll help you choose a location that suits the type of shoot and your family’s personality.

What’s the best time for a newborn shoot?

Between 5 and 21 days old is ideal. Babies are sleepier and more settled during this window, which makes for those gorgeous curled-up shots. That said, I’m happy to photograph slightly older babies — it just becomes a different (and equally lovely) kind of shoot.

Do I have to pose?

As little as possible. I’ll give gentle guidance if you need it, but mostly I’m watching what naturally happens. The best portraits come from real moments, not manufactured ones.

How do I book a portrait session?

Head to the Get In Touch page and drop me a message with the type of session you’re after and your rough timeframe. I’ll come back to you promptly.

Do you photograph outside of Yorkshire?

Yes — I cover the wider UK for portrait sessions, and I’m based in Nottinghamshire so sessions in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and the East Midlands are absolutely fine. Just get in touch.
