North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer

North Yorkshire has some of the most beautiful wedding venues in the country — countryside barns, elegant stately homes, candlelit ceremony rooms, and a coastline that can turn a wedding day into something completely unexpected. I photograph weddings across all of it, in a relaxed, documentary style that focuses on real moments, genuine emotion and everything that actually makes your day yours. No awkward posing, no forced smiles — just honest, natural images from start to finish.
Being Yorkshire-born, I’ve spent years photographing weddings across this part of the county — from countryside barns around Thirsk to grand estates outside York and windswept elopements on the coast — and I’ve learned how each of these places flows, where the light tends to land, and where the real moments naturally happen.
If you’re planning a wedding anywhere from York and Harrogate to the Dales, the Moors or the coast, I’d love to hear about your day.
Relaxed Documentary Wedding Photography in North Yorkshire

Weddings in North Yorkshire tend to have a certain feel to them — open space, good light, and a pace that lets the day breathe rather than rushing from one staged moment to the next. My approach fits into that naturally.
I don’t stage moments or interrupt the flow of the day. Instead, I focus on what’s actually happening — the laughter, the nerves, the quiet in-between moments — capturing everything as it unfolds so your photos feel like a true reflection of the day rather than something directed.
That doesn’t mean I just stand at the back and hope for the best. After 20 years and 600+ weddings, I know when to step in — to gently organise a group for family photos, to nudge things along if timings start slipping, or to give you a few minutes of simple direction for your portraits — and when to disappear into the background and let the day get on with itself. That balance is what keeps things relaxed while making sure nothing important gets missed.
Most of my couples tell me the same thing before they book: “we’re not really photo people.” Good — that’s exactly who this works for. You won’t spend your wedding day being marched around for a shot list. You’ll spend it at your wedding, and I’ll be quietly getting on with photographing it.

North Yorkshire Wedding Venues I’ve Photographed
Finding the right venue is one of the biggest decisions in planning a wedding, and North Yorkshire genuinely has some of the best options anywhere in the country. Each one brings something different — the scale of a stately home, the atmosphere of a candlelit barn, the unpredictability of the coast — but the way I work stays the same wherever we end up.
Some of my favourites:
Tithe Barn At Bolton Abbey
- A beautifully restored barn with stunning countryside views, overlooking Bolton Abbey & the North Yorkshire countryside.

Goldsborough Hall
A stately home offering elegance and history in Knaresborough.

Filey Brigg Coastal Elopement
A unique elopement experience on the rugged landscape of Filey, along the awe-inspiring North Yorkshire coast.

Rudding Park
A luxury Harrogate wedding venue, with the most beautiful grounds, and amazing food!

Sun Pavilion
A unique Art Deco venue with a stunning glass-domed roof, set in the beautiful Valley Gardens.

Yorkshire Wedding Barn
A modern barn venue with breathtaking rural views, ideal for a relaxed, rustic wedding day.

The Normans
A stylish barn venue with a perfect mix of old and new, featuring stunning candlelit ceremony spaces. I love it so much that it’s where Melanie & I got hitched!

The Coniston Hotel
A countryside retreat with a lake view to die for!
Hornington Manor
A charming Grade II listed farmhouse offering exclusive-use weddings with stunning barn and courtyard spaces.

Sandburn Hall
A beautiful venue with a lakeside setting, a large oak-framed ceremony room, and panoramic views of the York countryside and the attached golf course.

Howsham Hall
A grand, elegant venue near York, combining historic charm with modern luxury. It’s simply stunning!

Carlton Towers
Carlton Towers isn’t just another stately home — it’s a country house packed with character, history, and grandeur!

Low Osgoodby Grange Wedding Photographer
A gorgeous new festival-style wedding venue near Thirsk, Low Osgoodby Grange has a woodland ceremony area, tipis, a beautiful lake, endless countryside views and brilliant, customer-focused service from Charlie and her family.

Barns, Tipis and Relaxed Countryside Weddings
If you’re drawn to something informal — a day where guests can wander between the ceremony, the drinks, the food and the dancefloor without it ever feeling like a schedule — North Yorkshire’s barns and countryside venues are brilliant for it.
Places like The Normans, Yorkshire Wedding Barn and Low Osgoodby Grange all have that quality where the day just unfolds naturally, and that’s exactly where documentary photography earns its keep. Real laughter outside with a drink in hand, confetti, speeches, the inevitable muddy shoes — that’s usually where the best photographs come from.
Country House and Estate Weddings
For something on a grander scale, North Yorkshire has some genuinely stunning country house and estate venues — Goldsborough Hall, Rudding Park, Howsham Hall and Carlton Towers among them. These places give you a different kind of day: grand rooms, gardens, staircases, parkland, lakes. Brilliant for portraits and for that sense of occasion.
But even somewhere as grand as Carlton Towers, I work the same way I do everywhere else. I’ll photograph the setting properly because it deserves it, but the focus is still you, your people, and what’s actually happening in the room — not turning the day into a stately home brochure shoot.

Coastal Weddings and Elopements

I also photograph weddings and elopements along the North Yorkshire coast — Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and the cliffs and beaches around them. Filey Brigg, in particular, has given me one of my favourite shoots of the last few years, in driving rain and wind, with a couple who were laughing the whole way through it.
Coastal weddings are unpredictable in the best way. The weather does what it wants, the light can be extraordinary, and the landscape gives you something completely different from a barn or country house. If you’re thinking about a small elopement or a relaxed coastal celebration, I’m very much up for it — just bring a coat.
Experienced North Yorkshire Wedding Photographer
With over 20 years of experience and more than 600 weddings photographed, I bring a calm, steady presence to the day. Weddings don’t always go exactly to plan — and to be honest, the ones that don’t are often more memorable for it. Rain that wasn’t forecast, speeches in a room with terrible light, timings running an hour late, a power cut, a dog that’s decided today is the day it won’t behave. I’ve seen most of it, and none of it throws me.
From changing light to tight timelines, I’m used to working quietly in the background while keeping things moving, so you can stay focused on actually enjoying your wedding.
I photograph weddings throughout North Yorkshire, including York, Harrogate, Ripon, Thirsk, Malton, Skipton, Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. Whatever kind of day you’re having — countryside barn, coastal elopement, grand estate or a church wedding in a village hall — the approach stays the same: relaxed, natural, and focused on what’s real.
North Yorkshire Wedding Photography FAQs
Do you photograph weddings across all of North Yorkshire?
Yes — York, Harrogate, Ripon, Thirsk, Malton, Skipton, Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the villages in between. If you’re not sure whether your venue counts, just ask.
Have you photographed at our venue before?
Possibly — I’ve covered a wide range of North Yorkshire venues over the years, from barns and country houses to coastal locations. You’ll find some of these further up this page (the list isn’t exhaustive, so there are plenty that haven’t been added yet!), with links through to full galleries from real weddings there. If your venue isn’t listed, that’s not a problem — I’ll usually go and have a look beforehand if I haven’t shot there.
What’s your style of wedding photography?
Relaxed, natural and documentary-led. I’m there to capture the day as it actually happens — genuine reactions, real moments, the atmosphere of the room — rather than working through a list of staged shots.
Do you still do family group photos?
Yes, and most couples want a handful. I just keep the list short and organise it quickly so you’re not stood around in a car park for half an hour while someone goes to find Uncle Dave.
What about couple portraits — do we have to pose?
Not really. Most couples tell me they hate having their photo taken, which is fine — most people do. I usually take you away for around ten minutes, put you in the best light possible, let you relax, and that’s it! No stiff posing, no standing in a field pretending to laugh at nothing.
What if the weather’s bad?
North Yorkshire weather does what it wants, and I’m used to it — rain, wind, bright sun, dark barns, candlelight. Bad weather has produced some of my favourite photos. It doesn’t stop the day, and it won’t stop the photography.
Do you cover coastal weddings and elopements?
Yes — Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and the surrounding coast. These tend to be smaller, more relaxed days, and the coastal light and weather can make for genuinely striking photos.
How far in advance should we book?
Popular summer Saturdays can go quickly, so it’s worth getting in touch once you’ve got a date and venue sorted. If your wedding’s coming up soon, ask anyway — I may still have the date free.
