Just how gorgeous is baby Archie?! Featured on my blog last month was his mummy’s pregnancy photo shoot. A few weeks later, baby Archie made his overdue appearance – and isn’t he a handsome dude!

Sharing such an intimate part of a family’s life is always a real honour and a privilege for me. The Yorkshire family photographer took place at baby Archie’s house, along with big brother Theo and his parents. As I mentioned last time, this was the SIXTH time that they had trusted me to document amazing aspects of their lives – and I totally adore them.

My Approach to Newborn Photography

Same way I shoot weddings and everything else — I don’t direct it. Nobody gets arranged in a basket, nothing gets wrapped, and there are no wooden letters spelling out the birth weight. Your baby does what your baby does, your house looks how your house looks, and I photograph that. What you get:

Whatever light your house has that day
No props, no baskets, no fairy lights
Baby left exactly how baby wants to be
The messy in-between bits, not only the calm ones

Somewhere between 5 and 21 days old is the sweet spot. They’re sleepier, curlier, and still brand new. But you pick the day, and you pick the time. Morning, afternoon, whenever your baby is usually at their happiest and whenever actually suits you — not me.

And I come to your house. No studio, no driving across Yorkshire with a two-week-old in the back, no sitting in someone’s waiting room in your coat.

Here’s the bit that matters most though. There’s no rush. None. If baby needs a feed, feed them. Needs changing, change them. If they kick off completely and want twenty minutes of cuddling before they’ll settle — that’s fine, and I mean that. I’ll put the camera down and have a brew with you. In 20 years I’ve never once looked at my watch on a newborn shoot, and I’m not going to start on yours.
