Historic Grandeur Meets Modern Romance
Howsham Hall has an incredible history. Built in the 17th century by Sir William Bamburgh, its stunning Jacobean architecture makes an unforgettable first impression. It even served as a base for the Royal Air Force during WWII! But what I love most about shooting here is how it takes all that majestic history and creates a space that actually feels intimate and welcoming.
Erin and Scott wanted their day to be entirely about celebrating with their favourite people without feeling stiff or overly formal. Howsham Hall provided the perfect, elegant backdrop for their completely chilled-out vibe.
A Ceremony to Remember
When it comes to ceremony spaces, Howsham Hall leaves you spoilt for choice. Whether you opt for an outdoor ceremony in the beautiful Italian Garden by the Garden Temple or stay inside, the light is fantastic.
Erin and Scott chose to tie the knot indoors, surrounded by their closest friends and family. The grand windows let in the most beautiful natural light, which is an absolute dream for documentary wedding photography. It allowed me to capture all the subtle, candid moments—the nervous smiles, the happy tears, and the quiet glances—without needing to use intrusive flashes.
The Reception: Candids in the Great Hall
After the ceremony, the guests mingled, and we took full advantage of the 80 acres of private parkland for some relaxed couple portraits. The beauty of Howsham Hall’s grounds is that you don't have to wander far to find a stunning backdrop, meaning Erin and Scott could get back to their guests quickly.
They held their wedding breakfast in the spectacular Great Hall. With its magnificent fireplace and historic charm, it’s an incredible room for a celebration. From a photography perspective, the layout of the Great Hall, flowing into the Ballroom and The Orangery, makes it incredibly easy to blend into the background. I was able to capture the roaring laughter during the speeches and the brilliant energy on the dancefloor as the evening rolled in.
